The larger the stone you use, the higher the propensity that problems can be transferred from the sub-base, in a dry-set installation or from the slab in a wet-set installation. In particular, the fulcrum effect or a small void opening underneath can cause a failure of the stone. In a wet-set scenario, a crack transferring through the slab is less likely to transfer through the body of a 4×4 than a large format paver.
